John-The Fourth Gospel
If you’ve spent much time exploring the four Gospels that tell about the life of Jesus, you might have noticed great similarities between the first three books of the New Testament; Matthew, Mark, and Luke. Scholars have explained this with the idea that much of the material in these three books comes from similar sources. Mark appears to have been written
first, somewhere just after AD 70, and Matthew and Luke use Mark’s Gospel as an outline, adding in additional material.
None of these statements can be used to describe the Gospel of John, sometimes called the Fourth Gospel. Although there are some familiar stories that occur in all four Gospels, John’s telling of them is often quite unique, as is his writing style. John’s Gospel includes long, intricate stories, and scenes where Jesus speaks at length, such as his final words to the disciples at the Last Supper, which goes on for four complete chapters.
During the weeks between Easter and Pentecost we’ll explore some of these stories from the Gospel of John, the one that is not like the others. Join us in person at 10:30 a.m. or later in the day on YouTube.
